There are numerous advantages to using open-source software where portals are concerned.Not only are developers excited about this technology but company executives, academic entities and non-profit organizations are also applauding this technology because of its innate ability to disperse customized information and encourage collaboration.The main issue when deciding to build a portal is the Portal Framework.There are numerous commercial frameworks available as well as open source frameworks that are free.
For the purpose of this paper only open-sourced portal software will be considered. First, a portal is a web-based application that acts as a gateway between users. A portal allows a user to determine what content is important to them. The important difference here that is worth noting is the user. A typical website focuses on all the users and a predetermination is made by the website authors as to what the users should see. Each user that visits a particular site will experience the same things as the next user. In sharp contrast, a portal provides the user with information from diverse sources and a plethora of content choices. Dont get confused and think that a portal doesnt have a targeted audience because it does. It just allows that targeted audience to interact in a personalized way with the site. Content portals share information or knowledge and often referred to as Content Management Systems (CMS). Transaction portals supply users with the ability to execute transactions or receive transaction executed by others. Finally, collaboration portals allow people to work together. Collaboration portals are gaining momentum in the world of academia. Customization from a portal perspective is taking the default interface such as the content and layout of a portal and allowing the user to change it to their preferences. A good portal will make this easy by providing wizards and explicit instructions. According to Bernal, personalization is matching content with the user and Based on a user profile, personalization uses rules to match the services, or content, to the specific user.
